Kleinfeld’s Book Selected as One of Three Best Political and Legal Subject Books of the Year
Washington, DC – Truman Project President Rachel Kleinfeld’s book, Advancing the Rule of Law Abroad: Next Generation Reform, has been named one of Foreign Affairs Magazine’s Best Political and Legal Subject Books of 2012 in their November/December 2012 issue. Foreign Affairs is published by the Council on Foreign Relations.
Each year, the Albert G. Milbank Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University selects the most important books on political and legal topics. Kleinfeld’s book was one of three selected in 2012 by Albert G. Milbank Professor G. John Ikenberry.
In his review, Ikenberry, who served as both the senior military and civilian U.S. government official in Afghanistan, wrote, "Kleinfeld brings together a good grasp of the scholarship on law and society with the sensibilities and hard earned experience of a field practitioner. The result is essential reading for the foreign policy community."
In Advancing the Rule of Law Abroad, Kleinfeld describes the history and current state of reform efforts and the growing movement of second-generation reformers who view the rule of law not as a collection of institutions and laws that can be built by outsiders, but as a relationship between the state and society that must be shaped by those inside the country for lasting change.
Advancing the Rule of Law is Kleinfeld’s second book. She is also the co-author of Let There Be Light: A Market-Based Solution to Electrifying the Developing World (2011).
