China Needs to Play By the Rules

Washington, DC – In response to President Obama’s comments in his State of the Union that America will continue to focus on Asia, President of the Center for National Policy Scott Bates said:

“The biggest challenge for America in the pacific is ensuring that China plays by the same rules of the road that the rest of the world does. When that happens, Americans can compete – and win – in the global economy.

There is no question that, after a long decade of wars in the Middle East, our focus should rebalance towards the Pacific. American exports are an important part of ensuring global economic and technology leadership. The President has done a good job at building a team of allies who can work together to hold China accountable to the international rules of the road. This approach must be comprehensive and sustained, rather than the one off type of effort that has too often characterized U.S.-China economic relations.”
