The Telegraph: The importance of a meal for all children

In a Macon Telegraph op-ed, Nicole Foerschler Horn, a Truman Project Fellow, advocates for schools to meet the nutritional needs of all children, without stigmatizing those whose families can't afford to pay for their food.

As I feed my 5- and 7-year old children lunch, I can’t help but think of Rep. Jack Kingston’s comments.

Kingston, R-Ga., said to a crowd in Jackson County that children who receive free lunches through the school lunch program should be forced to pay a small fee or do janitorial work for the privilege of eating. This would help kids learn there is no “such thing as a free lunch.”
